10:00-am Register. 10:45-am Briefing. 11:00-am Start
Adult Only (must be over 18)
The low down...
Similar to an Alleycat race, this event incorporates all types of urban and suburban riding. Part of the adventure is the unknown. You won't know what you're in for until the race begins. Expect mildly difficult terrain, mileage and challenges. Terrain will be mixed, therefor road, mountain or comfort bikes will work. Expect the unexpected, but expect the event to last between 2 and 4 hours depending on your skills.
The event starts after each person is given a manifest. The manifest consists of a list of checkpoints they must find. There will be a 15-minute period to ask questions before the race begins. Each item on the manifest will be revealed after solving a puzzle or riddle. After studying the manifest all participants are released at 11-AM to begin the adventure. Event ends at 3:00-pm Sharp! Categories are: Teams of 2, Geared and Fixed/Single Speed bikes. Participants choosing to compete as a team must remain within 50-feet of one another at all times. Halloween costumes are encouraged, but not expected or required. Your choice. Prize List:
- 1st Place Single Speed: $40 gift certificate to the Bike Way.
- 1st Place Geared: $25 gift certificate to the Bike Way.
- 1st Place Team: Two $20+ prizes of choice
- 2nd Place Single Speed: Choice of $20+ prize
- 2nd Place Geared: Choice of $20+ prize
- 2nd Place Team: Two $12 prizes
- 3rd Place Single Speed: Choice of prize
- 3rd Place Geared: Choice of prize
- 3rd Place Team: Choice of prize
Things to consider-
If you're not familiar with West / Southwest Omaha along with businesses in the area I would become familiar with the map below. You will be provided a map with general locations and coordinates. Time penalties will be given if participants seek help from the event organizer. The clues to the checkpoints will not give you specific directions or specific addresses to each checkpoint. A general knowledge of the area will help, but even if you're an out-of-town guest, we'll ensure you are given enough information to find each checkpoint. You'll have to seek out the exact location within that vicinity using the coordinate map provided at the start. See map below or click HERE for Google Map of general area.
Participants are expected to obey ALL traffic and criminal laws. If any law or rule is broken you will be disqualified. We don't want anyone getting hurt or injured. Once all items are obtained and tasks completed participants will go to the Finish area to turn in their manifest and items to the event organizer. Winners chosen by Finish time and point accumulation. Awards will be given to top finishers in Team, Geared and Single-Speed/Fixed category. Our sponsors have provided some top-notch items for winners and give-aways including Female specific prizes. Keep in mind this event has no registration fee. If you would like to make a donation to offset the cost of event insurance, it would be greatly appreciated, but it is not required. My intent in organizing this event is to promote cycling in Omaha and get more people out on their bikes. The event promises to be a great time!

New Info: 10/16/09: Prizes are adding up quickly! High Gear, The Bike Way and PowerBar have donated a bunch of cool prizes. There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in all three categories.
I like the suggested start time. That gives us folks with young kids a chance to participate and still get home for the trick-or-treat activities with the kids.
ReplyDeleteThe other option would be to do it LATE, but then we have to deal with possible drunk drivers.
Thanks for coordinating this. Hope to see you there.
Will we be asked to leave the country if we do it as a team or 3, or is this for individuals only? This sounds awesome!
ReplyDeleteAOJules: Good questions. NO, you won't be forced to flee to Canada if you race as a team. I'll go ahead and open a third category, which will be Teams of 2-3. Depending on WHAT I get donated as prizes, there may be nothing to award a 'Team' except personal satisfaction of being first place and maybe a make-shift trophy. Cool?
ReplyDeleteWhew. The headwinds involved in riding to Canada this time of year would suck. We are all about just having fun, so personal satisfaction (measured in avg number of belly laughs per hour) is just fine with us.
ReplyDeleteTo avoid getting the swine flu, I'd rather be kicked out of the country into Mexico.
ReplyDeleteI agree with doing it in the morning. Even though I don't have kids, avoiding drunks sounds better to me.
One consideration should be the drunks who are participants.
ReplyDeleteIs drinking and RIDING against the law, and grounds for being run out of town to Canada and an appointment with swine flu?
ReplyDeleteThe threat of swine flu and Canada is enough to keep me sober. At least until the event is over.
ReplyDeleteGot this event posted on The Bike Way's web site for ya!
ReplyDeleteExcellent! Thanks Sean.
ReplyDeleteThe event is shaping up nicely. It's going to be a riot.
Im hoping I can participate and for good weather.
ReplyDeleteI'm expecting both. Your participation AND good weather.
ReplyDeleteOK then...
ReplyDelete:-)
I'll put another not about this event on Bike Omaha, Pedal Omaha, and the Bike Masters blogs the week prior to the event.
ReplyDeleteScott Redd and I can also tweet it up a bit that week.
I'm looking forward to this event.
THANK YOU BOB & SCOTT! Tweet and Blog your hearts out! I was actually going to ask you to repost the event as it grew closer, but you already thought of that. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAre you going to make the 'Chrome' visit at Blue Line on Monday? My wife and I plan to.
Prizes are shaping up nicely! I have several sweet items and gift certificates donated by the Bike Way and High Gear. I'm also working on a few other things. Stay tuned! This event is going to rock your socks off! Spread the word so there's plenty of competition.
ReplyDeleteI might try to head down there if my kids are feeling ok. They were sick last week. I'd like to try on one of their wool hoodies to see how they fit, but I'm not sure I'd spend $160 on a hoodie. I might have to wait for a sale.
ReplyDeleteJames Hermson from Spokiz will probably be stopping by with some last minute prizes day of or he will be getting in contact with ya.
ReplyDeleteSWEET! More prize. Thanks Sean!
ReplyDeleteI'll have the prize break down posted in the next few days.
ReplyDeleteGotta like the swag. Looks like the weather has a good chance of being nice for Saturday.
ReplyDeleteYes, GREAT swag and weather is predicted to be in the mid-50's! I'll take it. I'll be posting the prize list within minutes.
ReplyDeleteIs there going to be a special division for Shants?
ReplyDeleteThat would be the Fixed-Gear/Single Speed category. Shants and Gears don't mix. ;)
ReplyDeleteWhat if you have a mixed team. One guy on gears and the other on single-speed?
ReplyDeleteHey Scott. Good question. We only have enough prizes for the top three in the three categroies and maybe a give-a-way or two. Because of this we will treat any team as a Team. So if a single speeder teams up with a geared partner, you'll be treated as a Team. The benefit to racing as an individual is that prizes are slightly better.
ReplyDeleteSee you Saturday!
Thanks D and Ultra K for a great day today! Spooks and Spokes was a blast and good times were had by all. Keep up the good work and hope to see a return for next year. Nice meeting some new bikers and hope to ride again soon!
ReplyDeleteThanks D and K for hosting the event. It was truly a fun event and I'm looking forward to next year.
ReplyDeleteI left my camera in a truck, but I did snap some pics on my phone. You can see them here.
Please post links to any other photos you have from the event.
Thanks EJ and Scott for your comments. I'm glad you both came out and had fun. Thanks also Scott for your write-up on your blog. Well done, as always.
